A prophetic word which came through the Life In the Spirit Seminar (LISS) Team for us at Northlawn United Methodist Church is Power. The in-filling presence of the Holy Spirit gives each of us the same power that raised Jesus Christ from the dead (Ephesians 1:18-20). This power enables us to hear God’s voice, to distinguish God’s voice from that of satan and others, to choose to follow God , and to do everything Jesus Christ did & even greater things.
My question in the past has been why then do we not see people healed of sickness, set free of bondage to addictions or evil spirits, operating in the gifts of the Spirit regularly, or lives growing rapidly in the fruit of the Spirit at Northlawn U.M. Church; or many other churches for that matter.
The revelation which I received through the LISS weekend is that the Holy Spirit’s power is an experienced power. It is more than an intellectual knowledge or words spoken in a creed. The Holy Spirit and the Holy Spirit’s power is an experienced reality. We are each unique, so this is why each person experiences the power of the Holy Spirit a bit differently.
Experiencing the power of the Holy Spirit, using the power of the Holy Spirit, and joyfully worshiping in the power of the Holy Spirit are each a learned experience. It is a learned experience because it is new to us – Scriptural teaching about the Holy Spirit has been lacking in most churches in the past century. It is a learned experience because in our humanness it takes practice to learn to recognize and use the Spirit of God’s power within us – it can seem foreign to us. Like any other learned experience it takes practice to learn. Practice means making mistakes, starts and stops, falling down, getting up, trying again, etc.
All this is to say that the Holy Spirit is guiding Northlawn U.M. Church to be a place where it is safe to practice experiencing the power, using the power, and worshiping in the power of the Holy Spirit.
May every moment of every day be a practice time!
Let the Holy Spirit’s power flow!
I am going to send you what my Father has promised; but stay in the city until you have been clothed with power from on high. Luke 24:49
But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth. Acts 1:8
Very truly I tell you, whoever believes in me will do the works I have been doing, and they will do even greater things than these, because I am going to the Father. John 14:12
For the kingdom of God is not a matter of talk but of power. 1 Corinthians 4:20
NOTE: Northlawn United Methodist Church recently hosted a Life In the Spirit Seminar led by a team of mostly lay people trained by Aldergate Renewal Ministries (aldersgaterenewal.org) This post is a follow up to that transformative event.
